What Is Cocaine?

Cocaine is derived from the leaves of the coca plant, and is usually sold as a white powder in small one gram baggies. Cocaine is a stimulant that affects the central nervous system. It casues an increase in heart rate, blood pressure and breathing. In many people, the use of cocaine provides the feelings of confidence, alertness and euphoria. The coca leaf can be chewed directly or made into tea, and are used legally like this in many countries. When snorted, it takes about 15-30 minutes to reach peak effect.

Cocaine can be processed by chemically altering the powder into crystals to create crack cocine, which is typically smoked. When smoked, the effect comes on very quickly, but also wears off very quickly.

What Are The Effects?

Low Doses

  • Increased heart rate
  • Increased alertness
  • Feelings of euphoria

High Doses

  • High doses of of cocaine can cause seisures, heart attacks or strokes

  • Cocaine is addictive.

What Else Should I Know?

  • Cocaine causes the blood vessels in the nose to constrict, which can cause damage to membranes.
  • After effects of cocaine use can include depression, anxiet, paranoia or agitation.
  • In the United States and many other countries, cocaine is illegal, and posession can result in prison terms.
